Every site is different
Soil type, drainage, frost depth, slope, loads and local rules vary from one property to the next. A method that works on sandy soil in a mild climate can fail on wet clay in a freeze-thaw region. Before you start, check your plans against:
- the installation instructions for the specific pavers, base materials and equipment you use
- your local building codes, permit requirements and HOA rules
- a licensed contractor or engineer for driveways, retaining walls, steep slopes, drainage problems or anything that carries heavy loads
Safety
Hardscaping involves heavy materials, powered equipment and digging. You are responsible for your own safety and the safety of anyone helping you.
- Call 811 before you dig. In the US, utility locating is free and required.
- Wear protective equipment. Use eye and hearing protection, gloves and safety footwear. Use respiratory protection when cutting concrete or stone, because the dust contains silica.
- Follow the operator's manual for plate compactors, saws and other rented or purchased equipment.
- Lift safely and get help with heavy loads.
