Techo Bloc Blu Grande: Size, Finishes, Prices and How the Big Slab Is Installed

Last Updated on October 20, 2026 by Umar Farooq

Techo Bloc Blu Grande is the largest slab in the Blu family: a single 19½ x 32½ inch rectangle, 2⅜ inches (60 mm) thick, for patios, walkways, pool decks and rooftop pedestals. It comes in Smooth, the denser HD² Smooth, Slate and HD² Slate textures, plus a made-to-order Polished version. A Smooth pallet holds 20 slabs (87.91 sq ft) and an HD² pallet 22 (96.71 sq ft). On Techo-Bloc's suggested retail list, it runs about $7 to $9 per sq ft, depending on finish and color. It's a pedestrian slab, not a driveway product.

I took the numbers below from Techo-Bloc's Blu Grande spec sheet and its Eastern Pennsylvania price list. The wider range is in our Techo-Bloc pavers overview.

Blu Grande size, weight and pallet coverage

From the Blu Grande spec sheet:

Weight per slababout 119 lbabout 125 lb

Each slab covers about 4.4 sq ft; the per-slab weights are my arithmetic. At roughly 120 lb, a Grande is a two-person carry or a job for a paver vacuum lifter. One person walking it across the yard is how corners get chipped.

It stays off driveways because CMHA says units with a length-to-thickness ratio of 4:1 or more shouldn't carry vehicles. Blu Grande's is about 13.7:1. For cars, use the 80 mm Blu 80.

Finishes and colors

  • Smooth: Chestnut Brown, Champlain Grey, Beige Cream, Greyed Nickel, Shale Grey and Onyx Black.
  • HD² Smooth: Chestnut Brown, Champlain Grey, Greyed Nickel and Shale Grey, with Beige Cream and Caffè Crema on the price list. HD² is the near-poreless high-density surface.
  • Slate / HD² Slate: textured, in Sandlewood, Shale Grey, Champlain Grey and Chestnut Brown.
  • Polished: made to order, 2 3/16 inches thick, 500 sq ft minimum.

Color pairing is covered in our guide to Techo Bloc Champlain Grey and the Blu colors.

What Techo Bloc Blu Grande costs

Suggested retail per sq ft from Techo-Bloc's Eastern Pennsylvania price list:

FinishList price per sq ft
Slate$6.99
Smooth$6.99 (greys, Chestnut), $7.59 (Onyx Black, Greyed Nickel, Beige Cream)
HD² Slate$8.47
HD² Smooth$8.47 to $9.09
Polished$12.94 to $13.56

Per slab, that's about $31 in Smooth grey and $37 in HD² Smooth grey. Use the list to compare finishes, not to budget to the dollar.

Laying patterns

The spec sheet shows three running bond patterns and one herringbone. Grande shares the 6½-inch Blu module (32½ = 5 x 6½, 19½ = 3 x 6½), so it also drops into Blu 60 modular patterns. Fewer joints is the whole reason to choose it.

Long slabs show every flaw in the base: a high spot makes a slab rock or leaves a lip. ICPI's lippage limit on walking routes is ⅛ inch, and CMHA wants the base within ±⅜ inch over 10 feet.

Sand-set patio or pedestal roof deck

Two cross-sections of Techo Bloc Blu Grande: a sand-set patio on 1 inch of bedding sand over compacted crushed stone, and HD2 slabs on adjustable pedestals over a roof deck rated at 776 lb per slab

On the ground, ICPI Tech Spec 2 calls for at least 4 inches of compacted crushed-stone base under a patio on well-drained soil, more on wet or frost-prone ground, and a 1-inch bed of loose, screeded concrete sand. Use a urethane pad under the compactor.

On pedestals, the spec sheet gives an allowable load of 776 lb per slab on a pedestal set, including a safety factor of 2, and recommends pedestals for Blu Grande in HD² only. Whether the roof can carry about 27 lb per sq ft is a question for a structural engineer.

Pay for HD² only where it earns it

My opinion: on a sand-set patio in a grey color, Smooth Blu Grande is enough. On pedestals or around a pool, buy HD². The gap is $6.99 against $8.47 per sq ft in the greys, about $590 on a 400 sq ft patio. Spending that on a sand-set patio behind the garage mostly buys you a better-looking invoice.
