Belgard Catalina Pavers: Catalina Grana vs Slate Sizes, Patterns and Colors

Last Updated on October 20, 2026 by Umar Farooq

Belgard Catalina pavers are a 3-piece modular concrete paver system that comes in two surfaces. Catalina Grana has a smooth, linear face with a slight bevel. Catalina Slate has a cut-slate texture. Both come in a 2 3/8-inch (60 mm) small set of 4 × 8, 8 × 8 and 8 × 12 inch pieces. Catalina Grana adds a large set (6 × 12, 9 × 12 and 12 × 12), a 6 × 9 border, and a 1 3/16-inch overlay version for laying over concrete. Belgard rates both for patios, pool decks, walkways and residential driveways. You'll mostly find Catalina in the West and in Florida. You can read more in the guide to slate pavers. If this applies to your yard, our guide to circular driveway dimensions goes into more detail.

I read the product data for both lines on Belgard's site, including the color list for every sales region, and the three Catalina pattern sheets. Sizes and colors below are Belgard's own. For how Catalina compares with Belgard's other lines, see Belgard paver dimensions.

Grana is the one most people mean. Belgard's Catalina Grana product page lists it in about 27 colors across its regions. The Catalina Slate page shows four: Amaretto, Napoli, Slate and Titanium, and all four are tagged for Florida only. (Yes, you can order Catalina Slate in the color Slate. Somebody at Belgard enjoyed that.) If you want the slate texture outside Florida, you are shopping for a different line.

Belgard Catalina pavers sizes, drawn to scale

Scale drawing of Belgard Catalina small set 4x8, 8x8, 8x12 and Catalina Grana large set 6x12, 9x12, 12x12 with area percentages

The two sets share a width logic but not a scale. The small set is built on a 4-inch module, so every piece is a multiple of 4 inches and patterns close without cuts. The large set steps in 3-inch increments along one side (6, 9, 12) with a constant 12-inch length. That makes it quicker to lay on an open patio and blockier to look at.

Pallet figures vary by plant. Belgard's cut sheet from its Stockton, California plant lists the large 3-piece set at about 120 sq ft and 3,230 lb per pallet. Ask your dealer for the sheet from the plant that actually ships to you.

The 17/33/50 pattern mix

Catalina is a random-looking system, but it isn't random. Belgard's pattern sheet for the small set builds patterns A, B and C from 17% 4 × 8, 33% 8 × 8 and 50% 8 × 12, measured by area. The large-set sheets use 25% 6 × 12, 25% 9 × 12 and 50% 12 × 12, including a running-bond layout.

The detail most people skip is the small print. Belgard says a pattern "may not necessarily reflect the percentages of stone sizes within a particular pallet", so you can end up with extras of one size. What goes wrong in practice:

  • Running out of the big piece first. Half of every pattern is the largest unit. If the pallet mix is lighter on it, you finish the field with a pile of 4 × 8s.
  • Working from memory. Print the pattern and chalk a few repeats on the base before laying. A 3-piece pattern drifts fast once you start "just making it fit".
  • Pulling from one pallet. Catalina's color blends vary from pallet to pallet. Pull from three at once so a light pallet doesn't turn into a light stripe.

Colors by region, including Victorian

Belgard tags each color to the sales regions that stock it. I ran zip codes through the region lookup Belgard's own site uses to see which colors each region gets:

  • Southern California and southern Nevada: Anthracite, Bella, Hickory, Linen, Montecito, Rio, Scandina Gray, Sepia, Shaded Gray, Toscana, Victorian.
  • Northern California and Hawaii: the widest list, 16 colors, from Aspen and Riviera to blends named plainly, such as Tan Red Charcoal.
  • Arizona and New Mexico: Bella, Hickory, Rio, Scandina Gray, Sepia, Sierra, Sonoran Gray, Victorian.
  • Pacific Northwest: Dark Charcoal, Rainier, Rio, Victorian.
  • Florida: Amaretto, Napoli, Rio, Scandina Gray, Slate, Titanium.

None of the zip codes I tried in the Northeast, Midwest or Texas returned a Catalina color. Victorian is the color that turns up in almost every western region, which is why "Belgard Victorian Catalina" is a common search. It's a grey base streaked with tan and charcoal. Our Belgard Victorian pavers page covers the color across all the lines that carry it.

Pick the small set for anything with tires

Belgard rates both Catalina sets for residential driveways. I'd still put the small set under the car. The reason is aspect ratio: length divided by thickness. CMHA Tech Spec 10 says units at 4:1 or more shouldn't be used where vehicles drive, and 3:1 to 4:1 suits limited car use such as a home driveway. At 2 3/8 inches thick:

  • 4 × 8 and 8 × 8 work out to about 3.4:1.
  • 8 × 12 and 12 × 12 work out to about 5:1.

The small set gets half its area from the two compact pieces, so more of the driveway sits within CMHA's limit. The large set gets half its area from 12 × 12 squares. Use 45-degree herringbone where the pattern sheets allow it, and give the driveway a deeper base than the patio. The overlay version is 1 3/16 inches thick and is meant to be bonded over a sound slab, not laid on gravel. Our Belgard driveway pavers guide covers which lines hold up best under a car.

FAQ

What sizes do Belgard Catalina Grana pavers come in?

The small 3-piece set is 4 × 8, 8 × 8 and 8 × 12 inches, and the large set is 6 × 12, 9 × 12 and 12 × 12 inches. There is also a 6 × 9 border. All are 2 3/8 inches thick, and the small set also comes in a 1 3/16-inch overlay version.

What is the difference between Catalina and Catalina Grana?

They share the small set's sizes. Catalina Grana has a smooth, linear surface. Catalina Slate has a textured, cut-slate face and is only listed for Florida.

Can Catalina Grana be used around a pool?

Yes. Belgard lists pool decks as an intended use, and the surface and micro-chamfer are ADA-compliant.

How much do Belgard Catalina pavers cost?

Belgard doesn't publish Catalina prices, and I didn't find a dealer posting one. Get a quote per square foot from a regional dealer. Our Belgard cost guide has published prices for the lines that have them.

Why can't I find Catalina pavers near me?

Belgard only makes them for certain regions. In its color data, every Catalina color is tagged to the West Coast, the Southwest, the Pacific Northwest or Florida.
